Overseeding for Thicker, Healthier Lawns
Overseeding helps fill thin areas, improve grass coverage, and support more even lawn growth without removing the existing grass.
What Is Overseeding?
Overseeding is the process of spreading grass seed directly over an established lawn. New grass grows between existing plants, helping improve thickness and reduce open areas where weeds can spread.
This method is commonly used when a lawn is generally healthy but shows thinning from seasonal stress, foot traffic, or weather conditions.

Why Overseeding Is Used
Why This Approach Works
Lawns naturally thin over time, even with regular care. Overseeding helps address:
-
Thin or patchy grass coverage
-
Areas worn by traffic or pets
-
Uneven growth across the lawn
-
Open soil where weeds establish
By increasing grass density, overseeding helps lawns grow more evenly and maintain better coverage through the growing season.

Frequently Asked Questions?
Overseeding thickens thin lawns, fills bare spots, and helps prevent weeds by creating dense, healthy turf. We use grass seed suited for Alberta’s climate and apply it at the right time for the best results. The result is a fuller, stronger lawn that handles stress, traffic, and winter damage better.
The best time to overseed your lawn is late spring to early summer or late summer to early fall. Cooler temperatures, warm soil, and increased moisture create ideal conditions for grass seed to germinate and establish strong roots before winter.
Cover it with a thin layer of soil or mix it lightly into existing soil. Water lightly and frequently (several times per day) to keep the soil moist for the first 2–3 weeks. If the grass seed dries, it will not establish. Avoid foot traffic and pets, and wait to mow until new grass reaches about 3 inches tall to ensure proper establishment.
No. Weed control products will prevent grass seed from growing. Weed control and overseeding are scheduled separately to ensure the best possible results.
